GEO explained: how AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend.

Generative Engine Optimization is not a new channel. It is what happens when being quotable, well-cited and factually current becomes the price of being mentioned at all.

GEO · AI Search · SEO

The short version

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: the practice of making your business more likely to be surfaced, cited and recommended when someone asks an AI assistant for a suggestion. The name is new. Almost all of the work is not.

If your site is crawlable, fast, clearly structured and factually current, you are already doing most of GEO. If it is none of those things, no GEO tactic will rescue it.

How an assistant picks a business

Assistants do not rank ten blue links. They assemble an answer from sources they can retrieve or recall, then name a handful of options. Four things drive who gets named.

  • Retrievability — the assistant has to be able to find and read your page. Blocked crawlers, JavaScript-only content and slow servers all remove you from consideration before quality is even assessed.
  • Extractability — a paragraph that answers one question completely is quotable. A paragraph that circles a point across five sentences is not. Structure determines whether you can be pulled into an answer.
  • Consistency of facts — your name, services, service area, hours and prices should match across your site, your profile listings and third-party mentions. Contradictions make an assistant skip you rather than guess.
  • Off-site presence — mentions and citations on other reputable sites carry weight. A business that only exists on its own domain has a thinner footprint to draw from.

What actually moves the needle

  • Answer questions in the first two sentences, then explain. Do not make a machine infer your point.
  • Use one question per heading, phrased the way a customer would ask it.
  • Keep dates, prices, areas served and availability current. Stale facts get you skipped or misquoted.
  • Add Organization, Service and Article structured data so machines get a clean version of who you are.
  • Earn mentions on review sites, directories, local press and industry publications.
  • Publish consistently. A steady cadence signals an active business; a burst followed by silence does not.

Where GEO vendors overreach

A lot of GEO positioning is SEO with new packaging and a larger invoice. Claims about guaranteeing placement inside an assistant's answer are not credible: nobody controls the retrieval layer or the model's phrasing.

The honest framing is that GEO raises your probability of being mentioned by making you easy to find, easy to quote and hard to contradict. That is a quality bar, not a lever you can pull on demand.

Where to start

Audit crawlability first, then rewrite your three highest-value pages so each opens with a direct answer. Then fix factual consistency across every place your business appears. Those three steps do more than any GEO product on the market, and you can verify each one yourself.
